God's World - Faith Based on Fact (1)
Genesis Chapter 1:1 – 2:3
How we view the early chapters of Genesis affects our outlook on the whole of Scripture.
Are they ancient Jewish folklore? If so we must hold to
question the entire Scriptures
Are the what they claim to be, the inspired revelation of the Almighty God who through His chosen human scribes has revealed to us the true source of
our existence and His continued dealings with us through the subsequent generations? If so we must look at our attitudes & response to the claims of the creator on the lives of
His creation
There is good sound reason to focus on the person & completed work of our Lord Jesus Christ, but to correctly understand the purpose of Christ’s coming and the
redemption that He completed on Calvary, we need to look back into the old testament at the foundation on which His work was based.
The first words of the Bible are “In the
beginning GOD…..” (Gen1:1) God IS before all else
God does not make any attempt to justify Himself or explain His
person at this point, but moves ahead with a statement of what He did “In the beginning GOD CREATED….” (Gen1:1)
From
this point onward, God begins to reveal to us, human beings, something of the nature, the character & the personality of Himself. As we move forward in scripture the names by which God
chooses to reveal himself at different points to different individuals highlights his person.
Anything that has ever been made humanly has had a base or source material from which to
work. God created out of NOTHING “The earth was without form & void…” (Gen 1:2)
Day 1 Light – Separate
light from darkness Vs 3-5
Day 2 Sky & Water – Water covering the earth separated from water canopy above earth. Vs 6-8
Day 3 Land & Sea – Water collected
as sea, Vegetation covered the land Vs 9&13
Day 4 Sun Moon & Stars – Day/Night, Seasons defined Vs 14-19
Day 5 Fish & Birds – The sea & sky stocked
with living things Vs 20-22
Day 6 Animals - to fill the earth Vs 24&25 & Humans – Man & Woman to manage God’s creation and enjoy God’s company. Vs 25-30
“Then
God saw everything that He had made & behold it was VERY good…” Vs 31
Day 7 Task complete - GOD RESTED (Gen 2:1)
So we see in God’s creative hand an order and design as each step of creation paved the way for the next step. We see design, structure
& order in the sequence of creative actions.
We see the foundation of a platform of faith on which we can come to know God and enter into a meaningful relationship with
Him. We are introduced to the BEGINNING….
