"The Pastor's Message"

from the desk of Bruce Wilding (February 2005)

World attention continues to focus on issues of the struggles of war in the middle east, the rebuilding after the tsunami in Asia.

The question is so often asked
"Why does God let all this happen if He is a God of love"

Genesis Ch6 Vs5-8 (NLT) -tell us

5 Now the LORD observed the extent of the people's wickedness, and he saw that all their thoughts were consistently and totally evil. 6 So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them. It broke his heart. 7 And the LORD said, "I will completely wipe out this human race that I have created. Yes, and I will destroy all the animals and birds, too. I am sorry I ever made them." 8 But Noah found favour with the LORD.

The next three chapters relate the account of God dealing with Noah and his family as he brings them through the great flood. People of Noah's day were busy with their own affairs and did not have time in their lives for God.
Noah was not perfect, God did not show him a special deal.
Noah found favour (GRACE - undeserved kindness) with God.

This was God's judgement on an unbelieving world, but two chapters on God, recognising the wickedness of the human heart, made a promise

Genesis Ch8 Vs 20-22 (NLT)

20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and sacrificed on it the animals and birds that had been approved for that purpose. 21 And the LORD was pleased with the sacrifice and said to himself, "I will never again curse the earth, destroying all living things, even though people's thoughts and actions are bent toward evil from childhood. 22 As long as the earth remains, there will be springtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night."

The whole of creation is marred by sin and as result natural disasters and man made disasters will continue to happen.
This is not God's judgement but certainly provides opportunity for those of us who claim to be Christian to "Live Christ" to the world.

Jesus told the parable of the sheep & the goats, to do a kindness to another in Jesus' name is as doing the Kindness to Jesus.

Many kind and caring people will assist others in times of crisis (and sadly there are also those who will loot, profiteer or otherwise use a situation to their own advantage) but as Christians we have the opportunity to not only meet felt needs but present Christ to them.

The final judgements of God are still to come,

To the unbeliever
"What have you done about Christ" (Revelation 20:11-15)

To the believer
"What have you done with Christ" (1 Corinthians 3:9-15)
(2 Corinthians 5:9&10)

We cannot stop tragedy, but we can use it to the Glory of God.
